At Alpha International School, we believe that learning goes beyond the textbooks. Take the Mud House Project as an example. It’s an illustration of real-life, environmentally friendly education. Students of all ages built a house using eco-friendly mud. It is a perfect example of learning science, math, and environmental education all at the same time!
Students handled academic concepts and learned about real-life sustainable practices. It was a math learning experience in a very practical sense, all the way from calculating packing fraction down to the foundation depth, ratio and proportions of the walls, area and perimeter, and the whole construction down to the last detail. The roof slope is a geometric lesson and a balancing chemical marvel!
Students designed the house using arc theory, as it is free of sharp angles. It was a lesson in precision using no modern tools. Students learned about the insulating properties of wall thickness, exothermic mud houses in summer, and endothermic mud houses in winter. They also learned that the construction wall of mud houses exothermic environment in winter, and summer.
The project was a learning experience outside of academics, allowing students to experience soil, nature, and simplicity in a meditative way.
This project exemplifies Alpha’s philosophy that education transcends mere theory and is cultivated through practiced living and experiential learning. It sustains curiosity, builds creativity, and fosters awareness, all towards a future that is eco-positive.
